Budding Herb and Flower Garden

February 10th, 2012 § 4 Comments

I am so psyched about finally trying my hand at gardening. More importantly, I can’t wait to have all the cilantro I can eat.

So, I literally have not tried to grow anything since the first grade where the class did lima beans, but last Sunday, B and I planted all sorts of vegetables, and I threw in a sunflower mix. It’s been less than a week and some are sprouting! I haven’t killed anything yet! Yay!!

In our collection: cilantro, mint, chives, thai basil, thai chiles, arugula, lettuce, catnip (for the l’il kitty), butternut squash, and the summer flowers.

The next challenge will be to plant them somewhere they can actually grow to their full size. Good thing we have about a month to figure that out…

Latest Addiction: DIY Christmas Throw Pillows

December 3rd, 2011 § 2 Comments

Before I embarked on this project, my sofa throw pillows were hodge podge, at best. Seriously. One is a big square blue pillow that came from B’s last bedset, and the other is a crappy IKEA pillow that doesn’t even fill in the pillowcase. I’ve been progressively getting more irritated at seeing how awful they are.

I know doing pillow covers is so Sewing 101, but I never really paid attention to anything to home decor until recently. Since it’s the Christmas season, I thought having some awesome red and gold pillows would be festive! I followed this easy how-to to make these:

This project was 100% fun and gratifying because it took me around 40 minutes to make. All I had to do was choose fabric, trim, and the pillow form size. I swear I was so pleased with myself I kept hugging them. I foresee multiple sets for each season…If anyone knows of other easy home projects like this please let me know!

A perfect example of eco-design

My great friend Betty Crafter is a genius when it comes to vintage finds. Her house, from being a 1962 structure to the mid-century modern pieces, embodies the ideal standard when it comes to eco-design. Of course, all the technology she needs to live in the 21st century are the exception (who can survive without netflix?), but I am inspired to follow her lead and make my home as interesting and beautiful while trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible.

Betty has great before and after photos on her blog, so be sure to check out the article here. To read more about her passion for vintage and how to incorporate it into your daily life, check out her site bettycrafter.com.
